First identify the journeys where a car helps, then check driving eligibility and rental terms. Korean licences and recognized foreign licences or international permits have different requirements, and legal driving eligibility is separate from a rental company’s acceptance.
Eligibility and documents
The Ministry of Government Legislation explains that a valid international permit or mutually recognized foreign licence may allow driving for one year from entry, subject to vehicle categories and legal conditions. Not every foreign licence is recognized; check document expiry and restrictions as well.
SK Rent a Car distinguishes an IDP from an “International Driving License” and requires matching English names on documents. Those are that company’s instructions. Ask your selected supplier which originals are required and verify age, experience and deposit-payment conditions.

Use a car for the sections that need it
| Trip area | Planning consideration |
|---|---|
| Central Seoul | Compare parking at accommodation and attractions with a subway itinerary |
| Busan | Group city and coastal stops; check one-way streets and parking entrances |
| Jeju | Plan by region rather than combining east, west and south in one day |
| Jeonju | Plan parking outside walking-focused areas and check luggage and check-in access |
| Gangneung | Check centre and beach parking with a peak-period fallback |
Compare rental, cover and additional costs
- Add insurance, excess, potential loss-of-use charges, parking, tolls and fuel. A “full cover” label does not establish that there are no exclusions.
- Confirm registration of additional drivers, the child-seat type and installation, and whether one-way returns are allowed or charged.
- For your own vehicle, check covered drivers and travel conditions with the insurer. A companion taking a driving shift is not automatically covered.
Collection, driving and return checklist
- Photograph the bodywork, wheels, windows and fuel level at collection and record existing damage in the agreement. Save the incident contact and towing procedure.
- Set navigation while stopped and secure luggage so it does not obstruct visibility. Reduce driving or choose an alternative route in snow, heavy rain or strong wind.
- Confirm the return location, deadline and fuel rule, then retain the final receipt. On a flight day, reserve separate time to get from the return depot to the terminal.
A few good questions
Is my home driving licence enough to rent a car?
Do not assume so. Check recognized-licence or IDP requirements and the supplier’s document policy. Do not assume a translation or an online-purchased document is an official IDP.
Does using a Korean-language site make me eligible for local terms?
Eligibility depends on documents, identity and rental terms, not language. Ask the supplier before paying if its Korean and English instructions differ.
Will one passenger car fit a family?
Check space after child seats are installed and the number of suitcases, not just seating capacity. Confirm the specific model and luggage arrangement with the supplier.
