Acceptance of a foreign-issued card depends on the issuer, merchant and payment channel. Carry a physical card and a separate backup, and do not treat online booking acceptance as proof of in-person acceptance or vice versa.
Check with the issuer before travelling
- Check international purchases and withdrawals in Korea, spending limits, loss-reporting procedures and access to the issuer’s app.
- Review foreign-transaction and withdrawal fees, exchange-rate policy and available limit for security holds.
- If approval requires an SMS or app prompt, confirm that it will work in Korea. A data-only eSIM does not replace messages sent to your home number.
Check each payment situation
KTO describes widespread card use at major hotels and shops. This general guidance does not guarantee approval of a particular foreign card at every merchant.
| Situation | Condition to verify |
|---|---|
| Restaurants and shops | Card-network acceptance, physical chip payment and the approved total |
| Online accommodation or activities | Foreign-card payment option, authentication and booking confirmation |
| Hotel or rental-car security hold | Matching name, debit-card acceptance, authorization hold and release timing |
| ATM | Support for your network and international withdrawals, on-screen and issuer fees |

Choosing KRW or your home currency
If offered DCC billing in your home currency, compare the KRW amount, converted total, exchange rate and additional charges. Visa requires a choice with cost information and recommends declining conversion when details are missing or you are pressured.
Choosing KRW does not remove your issuer’s foreign-transaction costs. Exchange and fees depend on your card terms, so no card is assumed always cheapest.
Declines and duplicate-payment checks
After an error, check the amount, currency, issuer notification and payment or booking status. An unconfirmed booking does not prove that no authorization occurred; ask the merchant about the transaction status before retrying.
Use a backup such as another card or cash and keep receipts. If a card is lost, freeze it through the issuer’s official channel; for a dispute, collect the receipt and merchant response for the issuer. Do not send passwords or full card details to others.
A few good questions
Can I tap any foreign card directly at transit gates?
General card payments and transit functionality are different. Check the operator’s supported method and the relevant T-money or pass requirements.
Is paying in KRW always fee-free?
No. Issuer foreign-transaction charges can apply without DCC. Check both card terms and any costs shown at payment.
Should I keep retrying after a payment error?
First inspect issuer notifications and booking status. Ask the merchant about the existing transaction before retrying to reduce duplicate charges or authorization holds.
