A LITTLE CLARITY FOR YOUR JOURNEY

Using Korea’s subway: routes, transfers and exits

Plan stations, directions, transfers, card taps, lift access and the last journey of the day.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Plan the direction, interchange and final exit as well as the start and destination stations. Use the same transit card at entry and exit, and check pass coverage separately from whether the train is running.

From the map to the correct entrance

An accommodation name may match another branch. Compare the Korean address with the map pin, then check whether the closest exit has stairs or a lift. Walking inside the station is additional to the train journey.

At the platform, read the next station and direction alongside the line colour. Where express and local services differ, confirm that your train stops at the destination.

Using cards and tickets

KTO’s transit-card guide instructs riders to tap on subway entry and exit and on bus boarding and alighting. Present one chosen card rather than a wallet full of cards. Ask staff for help with insufficient balance or gate errors.

Stored-value cards, short-term unlimited passes and separate rail tickets are different products. Check airport express and intercity ticket requirements separately rather than counting them as ordinary subway rides.

Plan the path for luggage or a stroller

Seoul publishes station accessibility facilities. A listed lift does not establish that every exit or transfer has a continuous accessible path. Also check same-day maintenance or outage notices.

Last journeys and city boundaries

For a late return, the last departure from your first station is not enough. Check that the connecting train also runs, and plan an alternative after festivals or performances when entrances and crowds may change.

Do not assume a pass used in Seoul also covers Busan or another city. Check local operators for routes and products, and include only eligible sections in the Seoul pass calculator.

A few good questions

Do I need another card for every transfer?

Use the same transit card and follow gate and transfer instructions, while checking whether a particular train requires a separate ticket.

Does a station lift serve every exit?

No. Check the lift exit and the connecting platform route. Using a different exit can increase the street-level walk.

Can the fare tell me whether Climate Card applies?

No. Coverage depends on the line, stations, bus licensing region, direction and travel date, not just the fare.
